Roof cleaning
Problems with moss.
Moss can damage roofs in several ways:
1. Water Retention: Moss retains moisture, which can lead to water damage on your roof. When moss grows on the roof, it traps and retains rainwater, snow, or dew. The prolonged presence of moisture can degrade the roof's materials over time.
2. Lifting Shingles: Moss can grow between or underneath the shingles, causing them to lift or separate. This can create gaps that allow water to penetrate and damage the underlayment and decking.
3. Root Penetration: Moss has roots that attach to the roof's surface, especially in areas where the shingles have weakened or decayed. These roots can penetrate the roof's structure, leading to further damage and potential leaks.
4. Increased Weight: As moss grows and absorbs moisture, it becomes heavier. The added weight of moss on the roof can strain the structure and potentially lead to roof sagging or collapse.
5. Algae Growth: In addition to moss, algae can also grow on roofs. Algae feed on the limestone in shingles, causing them to deteriorate, lose granules, and shorten their lifespan.
It's important to address any moss growth on your roof promptly to prevent further damage. Regular roof maintenance, including cleaning and removing moss, can help extend the life of your roof.
Making it shine.
Cleaning the roof is broken down into two sections.
First we remove all the large moss spires by hand, using our polled equipment.
You then have a chose of cleaning methods, which we can advise you on which would be best for your roof type.
See our roof cleaning methods below.
Steam cleaning
Steam cleaning allows for instant results killing all the living matter and sterilizing the surface of the roof tiles.
Steam cleaning uses half the pressure than that a pressure washer would use to clean a surface.
Steam droplets are up to 1700 x smaller than a droplet of water, This allows the steam to penetrate deeper into the surface and lift the bio life and dirt off much more easily than a pressure washer can.
Soft washing
Soft washing is the process of using chemicals by spray or brush application.
The chemical is applied to the surface and left for a short period of time to brake down the living matter on the surface.
The chemical is then washed off.
Soft washing is ideal for fragile surfaces such as render as very low pressure is needed in its process and can reach deeper into the surface its applied to, leaving profound results.
Biocide treatment
Biocide is a biodegradable sterilizing film which we apply to protect the roof and prolong the return of moss, by degrading any living matter under its applied layer.
Biocide can be applied after moss removal, with full results being shown within 6 to 8 months. Or for instant results, Biocide can be applied after steam cleaning or soft washing.
